Topic Three: Web Development & Social and Ethical Issues

In this topic we will investigate the social and ethical issues that emerge from the use of technology. Each student will publish their research on a website of four pages.

Each student will be given one of the following topics to investigate:

  • Security

  • Piracy

  • Plagiarism

  • Social Isolation

  • Reliance

  • Ergonomics

  • Health

  • Cyber Safety

  • Addiction

  • e-waste

Students will research the following:

1. What is the definition of the topic? Example: "Cyberbullying is when an individual is attacked via social media or digital devices to embarriss or hurt that person."

2. Provide an example of the issue highlighted in the news. Example: "Amanda Todd was a young girl from Canada who was cyberbullied. Her case is a famous one because she uploaded YouTube videos about her situation where she used a series of flash cards to tell her experience of being blackmailed into exposing her breasts via webcam, bullied and physically assaulted. The video went viral after her death when she suicided in 2012."

3. List the negative consequences that can result from the issue. Example: Children are willing to kill themselves as a result of the pain caused by this form attack. Cyber bullying is at an all-time high and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Bullies who used to be in the schoolyard threatening to beat up someone if they didn’t give them their lunch money, are now online posing as anyone they want to in order to avoid being caught.

4. List some of the measures an individual can take to keep themselves safe. Example:

  • Always think about what you post.

  • Keep your password a secret from other kids.

  • Think about who sees what you post online.

  • Keep your parents in the loop.

  • Talk to an adult you trust about any messages you get or things you see online that make you sad or scared.

Overview of the Topics

Security

With so much personal and financial data online it is crucial to make sure it is secure. We secure our smart phones and laptops with passwords and usernames, and our credit cards with PIN numbers. When has security been an issue with big banks in recent times? Has there been new legislation (laws) to deal with peoples privacy since email and the internet became more popular?

Possible Keywords: technology, security, privacy, news, banks

Piracy

Before our music and movies turned digital it was harder to make copies of them without losing quality. Now we have digital media where files copy at the exact quality. It is becoming easier and easier for people to distribute copies of music and movies and TV shows. Whicht famous band took Napster to court? Why did they do that and happened as a result?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, piracy, napster, court

Plagiarism

All digital media is easy to copy. Nothing easier than copying and pasting something your find on the internet. One thing you learn at school is not to submit work that you did not write. Can you find an example in the news about someone who used someone elses written work and said it was their own?

Social Isolation

When people become obsessed with computer games or communicating with people online that can isolate themselves for real interactions. What is Hikikomori, where and how does it happen?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, hikikomori, isolation, gaming

Reliance

If your teacher lost their laptop they would not be able to do the attendance fro the class, write assessment tasks or read the many emails their receive each day. Everyone who draws a wage relies on digital technology to ensure their wages appear in their bank acount regularly. What can happen if something stops those digital technologicies from working?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, reliance, banking, breakdown, network

Ergonomics

If you spend a lot of time working on a computer you need a workspace that supports your health. Your chair, access to natural light, being able to relax your eyes by looking out the window, the height of your table all can affect your posture, your eyes and your general health. Can you find an example where a company was taken to court for not supplying an ergnomic workplace to use technology?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, ergonomics , compensation, hot-desking

Cyber Safety

There are a lot of things you need to be safe from online. People want to steal your identity or your money. Some people like writing viruses to damage your computer or the data you have saved. Some people might want to meet you in the real world so they try to find out about all your personal information. Can you find an example in the news where someone was stalked online?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, eSafety, stalking, harassment

Addiction

Everyone carries smart phones these days and can become addicted to their use. Computer games are very addictive which can overwhelm a person's life. Gaming binges can lead to very serious consequences. can you find out what happened in Taiwan in 2015?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, gaming, addiction, binge, taiwan, 2015

e-Waste

Each year a new digital product is eleased onto the market. A new iPhone, a new tablet, a new gaming console. With each new "must-have" product comes tonnes of old digital products thrown out to the rubbish tip. Electronic waste is becoming a big issue and in some developing nations such as thailand it has become a legal issue. How is India and Thailand handling e-Waste?

Possible Keywords: technology, news, e-waste, electronic, waste, rubbish, india, thailand

WEB DEVELOPMENT

Now that you have collected all your research - you can publish it all onto a website!

You will create FOUR pages that link together.

1. The HOME page that will display the Definition of your topic.

2. The NEWS page where you will display a summary of an example in the news and link to where you found the information.

3. The CONSEQUENCES page where you will summarise what negative consequences can arise from the issue.

4. The SAFETY page where you will list the measures a person can take to protect themselves from the negative outcomes.

Each page is written in HyperText Markup Language (HTML). HTML is not a programming language in the truest sense, but a scripting language that formats how text appears on web pages. When we start a new website we need to make a folder for all the pages and images. So make a folder name after the topic you have been told to investigate Example "CyberbullyingFolder".

If you open NOTEPAD you can use it as an HTML editor.

Copy and paste the code below:

<html>

<title> Social & Ethical Investigation

<b>Definition of Cyberbullying</b><p>
Cyberbullying is when an individual is attacked via social media or digital devices to embarriss or hurt that person.
<p>

</body>
</html>

Once you paste the text it will look like the image below:

Using your mouse and the ENTER key, carefully edit the text to look like the code in the blue above. Be careful not to remove any of the code. It might even be a better idea just to copy the text carefuly.

You can see that the file starts with <html> and ends with </html>. The first is an OPEN tag and the the one with a slash is a CLOSE tag. In the table below you can see all the html tags being used in this web page and what they do.

Once you have your file looking like the one displayed below you need to save it as home.html and select All Files.

Now we can open the page in Google Chrome which will display the website as intended.

Once you have your home page working you are going to edit the content to YOUR name and YOUR topic you are investigating. Also the definition of your topic. See the image below that shows you where the content is to be changed.

Now you need to publish the other three questions on the other three pages. See the HTML belwo with how each displays. remember you can use the same HTML from your first home page and edit it, or you can copy the html from the files displayed below.

APPLIED DESIGN TASK

Students will be designing the HOME page for their own business. You can use w3schools.com or Grok to add CSS stylings to your own design. the Web page needs to have an appropriate menu that contains links to other pages (These other pages do not need to be created or submitted). Below are two examples of very good web pages complete with excellent icons created with Turtle Programming.
